Recently, Maui has been hurt by the shut-down of some major airline carriers. With the number of flights reduced to the island, supply has diminished, thus creating less travelers to the island, while also spiking air fares making visitors less likely to come.
There was some good news yesterday when Alaska Airlines announced they will be will inaugurate four-times-weekly service between Oakland, Calif., and Kahului beginning Nov. 9, 2009. The airlines said in a press release,
"Hawaii has become a major market for Alaska Airlines in just a short time, thanks to the loyalty of our customers and the great service provided by our employees," said Steve Jarvis, vice president of marketing, sales and customer experience. "We will have 59 flights a week to the four major Hawaiian Islands, and we’re offering low fares and Alaska Airlines Vacations packages that make Hawaii travel even more affordable."
Opening up a new channel from the Bay Area to the island of Maui is positive news for Maui businesses. California is a huge market for Maui tourism covering 29% of all visitors to the island and the Bay Area is major component. I hope to see other airlines follow in Alaska’s footsteps and expand the number of flights to the island.
In these down turns of the economy, everybody can use all the help they can get.
