GE and Maui Electric Need Your Help

General Electric has teamed up with Maui Electric to test a new energy distribution strategy.  They will "deploy smart grid technologies at a substation on the island to reduce peak load, enable higher penetrations of renewable energy, and improve the grid’s reliability and performance."

The goal of the project is to see if regulating consumer energy demand can be used to deal with the fluctuations in energy production from renewable resources, according to the GE blog.

The Roi Roundup

Last month, spearfisherman held a tournament in Lahaina in conjunction with the International Year of the Reef to rid the reef of invasive fish. The Roi Roundup, as it was called, sent 80 divers into the waters right off of the Maui coast to spear the predators. According to the Honolulu advertiser, each roi eats an average of 146 fish per year and organizers say the roundup brought in 218 roi, which will save 31,000 fish per year.

Lahaina Cracks Top Ten Christmas Destinations

According to Orbitz.com, Lahaina is in style and one of the top places to vacation this Christmas.

Last week, Orbitz kicked off their holiday travel season with their annual list of top 10 Christmas destinations. Breaking the top ten this year and debuting at #9 was Lahaina, Maui known for its bustling shopping, dining, weather, scenery and endless activities.

Maui Invitational Tips-Off Today

Today marks the beginning of the 25th annually Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center. Eight teams from across the U.S., including the #1 ranked team UNC, are poised to battle it out over the next few days to be crowned the 2008 EA Sports Maui Invitational winner.

First tip-off starts at 10am local time when St. Joseph’s of Philadelphia squares off against Texas of the Big 12. UNC plays local favorite Chaminade University at approximately 4:30 today.

Maui’s Own Shane Victorino World Series Champ

Lahaina.com would like to congratulate one of Maui’s own and former St. Anthony High School graduate, Shane Victorino, on a job well done winning the 2008 World Series.

Victorino plays for the Philadelphia Phillies who beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 4-3 in Game 5 of the World Series. The Phillies won the series 4-1 and Victorino was instrumental in the championship run with his timely offensive hitting, exceptional speed on the bases, and defensive prowess.
