Maui Test Prius to be Unveiled

Looking for something to do Monday afternoon?  How about checking out the new hybrid Prius that Maui county is going to put on the road for testing.

The Prius is a rechargeable Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) converted from a standard Toyota Prius that is owned by the county.

From the county Press Release:

"The PHEV is a test car that will wirelessly transmit data as part of a national advanced technology vehicle study being conducted in cooperation with the Idaho National Laboratory/U.S. Department of Energy. The project presents a unique opportunity for Maui to learn more about the latest advances in automotive technology and data automation."

The car will be unveiled on Monday, April 6th, at 2:30pm on the front lawn of the County Building in Wailuku. The county is encouraging the public to attend, so give it a shot!

Maui Bus to Extend Morning Service in Central Maui

The County of Maui Department of Transportation announced today that Maui Bus will extend morning service by one hour in Central Maui beginning at 6:30 a.m. on the Kahului and Wailuku Loops and 7:00 a.m. on the Kahului and Wailuku Reverse Loops. These changes are effective April 1, 2009.

The Hawaii Superferry, the first island to island car and passenger ferry service of its kind, is now looking for alternatives to the Hawaiian islands following a Hawaii state supreme court ruling that lawmakers went too far to keep the ship sailing in our waters.

New Hospital to open in Lahaina

The State of Hawaii has approved plans to start the development on Maui’s second hospital, which will be located on 15 acres in Lahaina near the Lahaina Civic center.

State Health Planning and Development Agency administrator Ronald Terry approved the application for the $46 million facility to be built.

Model Citizen

Raised in Lahaina, Tori Praver is no stranger to the water.  So being photographed for spreads in the last three years Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue has been completely natural.

Tori was recently interviewed in the Advertiser, discussing her first love (surfing), her workout habits, and her future plans.  While she loves ice cream, she misses the malassadas, poke, and poi of the islands.  Now that she is an international superstar model, her travels keep her quite busy.  She still manages to make it home to see her family quite often, though.

The Roi Roundup

Last month, spearfisherman held a tournament in Lahaina in conjunction with the International Year of the Reef to rid the reef of invasive fish. The Roi Roundup, as it was called, sent 80 divers into the waters right off of the Maui coast to spear the predators. According to the Honolulu advertiser, each roi eats an average of 146 fish per year and organizers say the roundup brought in 218 roi, which will save 31,000 fish per year.

Lahaina Cracks Top Ten Christmas Destinations

According to, Lahaina is in style and one of the top places to vacation this Christmas.

Last week, Orbitz kicked off their holiday travel season with their annual list of top 10 Christmas destinations. Breaking the top ten this year and debuting at #9 was Lahaina, Maui known for its bustling shopping, dining, weather, scenery and endless activities.
