HAPA, the multi-award winning duo of Barry Flanagan and Nathan Aweau has been selected as the opening act for AMERICA in Concert, Saturday, August 8th at 7:00 pm on the Events Lawn at the MACC. Joining HAPA will be the Maui-based band "Why Bother" featuring Dane Lum Ho and Kala’e Camarillo.
The New York Times has called HAPA, “the most successful Hawaiian music group in recent history. The group has won multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards including Album of the Year. Aweau, Flanagan and frequent collaborator Charles Ka’upu recently filmed a music profile for National Geographic at its Washington, D.C. studios that is destined for one or more NatGeo editorial platforms this fall.
Kamehameha Schools senior Dane Lum Ho and recent graduate Kala’e Camarillo were the winners of KHON-TV’s first-ever “Band Champ” youth competition held in April. “Why Bother” won the grand prize of $5,000 cash, a recording contract and the opening gig for the America concert.
America will perform in Hawaii following a very successful concert in Manila. . Always an audience favorite,America was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in Sharon, Pennsylvania three years ago. America’s compilation album entitled, History: America’s Greatest Hits released in January 2007, spurred a critical reappraisal of the group’s work that made the band "cool" and "hip" with a newer generation of musicians and fans.
Bring your low-back chairs and blankets for a concert to remember. Food vendors include: 808 Deli, Maui Kettlecorn, Zia Maria’s Gelato, and WowWee Maui’s Kava Bar & Grill.
Tickets : $40 General Admission, and $65 for the VIP area. VIP area includes a variety of seating options, access to a private bar and theater restroom facilities. General Admission ticket holders may bring their own low-backed chairs or blankets. All tickets are plus applicable fees. Member discount available. Gates open at 6pm. Parking is available at the MACC with overflow parking at Maui Community College. There is no charge for parking. Food and beverages inside the concert grounds are available for purchase with scrip. Will call ticket holders must bring valid ID and the credit card used for purchase. A Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Statehood will be held prior to the concert from 4-6 pm on the A&B Amphitheater lawn. This event is free and open to the public. Fifty cent hot dogs, shave ice, beverages, pineapple tasting, community history, games, and a bouncy castle for the kids will also be available. This is a cash event, bring your quarters for a walk down memory lane with 1959 prices. Sponsored by the 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission.
