According to Travel and Leisure Magazine’s 2009 world’s best list, Maui ranks #6 as the world’s best island. Believe it or not, the 6th position is 3 spots below where Maui was on the 2008 list.
The poll was part of the magazine’s world best awards where they poll their readers asking them to rate the best hotels, cruises, airlines, outfitters, cities, islands, and more.
Not only was Maui in the top ten for best islands, but our resorts were featured on the best resorts’ lists as well. The Hotel Hana-Maui & Honua Spa cracked the top 100 best resorts in the world coming in at #83, and it was #3 on best resorts of Hawaii. We didn’t have another resort featured on the top 100 best resorts in the world, but Maui had its fair share on Hawaii’s 25 best resorts.
Here is where Maui’s resorts fell on the top 25 resorts in Hawaii:
#3 Hotel Hana-Maui & Honua Spa, Hana
#6 Fairmont Kea Lani, Wailea
#8 Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua
#13 Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, Lahaina
#14 Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa, Wailea
#15 Wailea Beach Marriot Resort & Spa, Wailea
#23 Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali

We stayed at the Hotel Hana-Maui for a night earlier this year, and they definitely deserve a spot near the top of those lists.
Sort of surprised that there are a lot of newcomers in that top 100 resorts (meaning no ‘08 ranking). That makes me feel like there’s a lot of instability and inconsistency year over year with this report. But, I’m no expert.
