The State of Hawaii has approved plans to start the development on Maui’s second hospital, which will be located on 15 acres in Lahaina near the Lahaina Civic center.
State Health Planning and Development Agency administrator Ronald Terry approved the application for the $46 million facility to be built.
The 53,900-square-foot West Maui Hospital & Medical Center will be federally-designated as a critical access hospital and offer emergency care, diagnostic radiology, clinical laboratory, pharmacy and social services. It also will have a stand-alone 40-bed skilled-nursing facility. Newport Hospital Corp. will be developing the hospital in partnership with the West Maui Improvement Foundation and the West Maui Taxpayers Association.
The plan for this hospital is great news for the local residents of Lahaina and all of west Maui. The hospital will provide emergency care services to the more than 69,000 residents who live on the westside. Previously, these residents had to travel the 35 miles into Wailuku for the island’s only acute-care facility. West Maui residents have argued for this facility to be built for a number of years now, especially as the population has grown with retirees and second-home vacationers.
A new facility on the westside was definitely needed and we are happy to see all plans have been approved to start the development of the project. Not only will the hospital provide health care needs to our residents, but also, provide jobs during a time when our economy is weak.
