Going back home to Maui is so much fun. I’ve been flying back more than ever lately, and each visit home just makes me want to return there for good. I got to spend Thanksgiving in Makawao, and it was incredible. The trade winds were up and the water was dirty, but my dad, Christy, Garrett and I decided to go for a quick shore dive anyway. Last month, spearfisherman held a tournament in Lahaina in conjunction with the International Year of the Reef to rid the reef of invasive fish. The Roi Roundup, as it was called, sent 80 divers into the waters right off of the Maui coast to spear the predators. According to the Honolulu advertiser, each roi eats an average of 146 fish per year and organizers say the roundup brought in 218 roi, which will save 31,000 fish per year.
