Come Celebrate the Lahaina Banyon Tree’s 138th Birthday!
The famous Banyan Tree of Lahaina will celebrate it’s 138th birthday on April 24th.
The tree was planted on April 24, 1873 by sheriff William Owen Smith to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Christian missionaries. It was brought from India, and at the time of planting, was only 8-feet high. It now has a dozen main trunks, and its canopy spreads over two-thirds of an acre between the Old Courthouse and Front Street. Today, the symmetry of the tree is maintained by volunteers. More »
About Lahaina
Just like the old Banyan tree that serves as the symbol of the city, Lahaina has roots that run deep. The city has been the capital of Hawaii, the playground for royalty and a whaler's village. Today, it is bustling with tourists visiting the shops, activities, restaurants and world renowned hotels and resorts. It is the art capital of the Pacific and its main thoroughfare, Front Street, is one of a kind.
Lahaina is technically a census-designated place that is located on the Westside of the island of Maui, Hawaii. It is home to approximately 10,000 residents and sees approximately 2 million visitors a year or 80% of all visitors to the island of Maui.
About Maui
Maui is home to some 125,000 residents and over 2.5 million visitors per year. Maui is the second largest island of the Hawaiian islands and the county of Maui consists of four islands; Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoʻolawe.
Also known as the valley isle for its large fertile isthmus between its northwestern and southeastern volcanoes, Maui is known for its pristine beaches and endless fun and relaxation. Maui is home to some spectacular hotels, timeshares, restaurants, shopping, and the beautiful resort towns of Wailea, Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kapalua. There is a reason why Maui is consistently ranked as one of the top resorts in the world. Find out why yourself.
