Great news for snorkelers and ocean lovers — the latest water quality tests at Honolua Bay Marine Preserve show excellent conditions across the board. Visibility has been averaging 80 to 100 feet, and marine biologists report healthy coral growth and abundant fish populations.
Honolua Bay, located on the northwest coast of Maui past Kapalua, is widely considered one of the best snorkeling spots in all of Hawaii. The bay is a protected marine preserve, which means no fishing or harvesting is allowed, and it shows — the reef is thriving with colorful parrotfish, surgeonfish, wrasses, and frequent green sea turtle sightings.
Access to the bay is via a short trail through an ironwood grove. There are no facilities at the beach itself (no restrooms or showers), so plan accordingly. The best snorkeling is along the right side of the bay where the reef is most developed. Morning visits before 10am typically offer the calmest water and best visibility.
A few practical tips: the trail can be muddy after rain, so wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty and change into water shoes at the beach. Parking is along the road above the bay — arrive early on weekends as spots fill up quickly. Reef-safe sunscreen is required by Hawaii state law, so make sure yours is zinc oxide or titanium dioxide-based.
The water quality monitoring program tests weekly for bacteria levels, turbidity, and nutrient concentrations. Current readings are well within safe swimming standards, making this an ideal time to visit.
